The design program for a healthy barn that is also an enjoyable destination for the equestrian is as complex, if not more complex, than a design program for a human residence.  Here is a short list of features this barn's horse mom manifested:

Orientation and protection from prevailing wind and driving snow, rain

Easy truck access

Drainage away from the barn

Comfortable, dry, easy to clean stalls (rubber crumb mats; thick reinforced impermeable rubber cloth over; wood shavings over

 Sloped aisleway with a flat section on top for the farrier; easy on the hoofs (interlocking rubber pavers)

Horse washdown / hay soaking area

Automatic hay dispensers

Heated automatic waterers

Agricultural lighting, outlets, ceiling fans, adequate electrical service, telephone

Large secured tack room / supplement prep area with sink and meds refrigerator (radiant heated floor)

Bathroom / storage / mechanical room (radiant heated floor)

Adequate headroom, 10' x 10' openings and sliding barn doors
